The Stockholm Green Innovation District is a network consisting of 11 members: The City of Stockholm, Atrium Ljungberg, Skanska, ElectriCITY, SkiStar, SVOA, the Stockholm Water Innovation Centre, Smart City Sweden, Urban Tech Sweden, Invest Stockholm and Green City Ferries. The Stockholm Green Innovation District was founded in 2020. Together we work to develop projects and leadership for sustainable and attractive cities.
Our main task is to create attractive and sustainable urban environments where people want to be – both today and tomorrow. Environments that contribute to the development of society and that provide a basis for growth and business. Real estate is the cornerstone of our operations, but we are actually more interested in the people who live in the environments we create.

ElectriCITY Innovation works together with our members and partners to foster a more sustainable world. We conduct a number of test beds in the fields of energy, transport, circular economy and digital urban development. The goal is to become a climate-neutral district by 2030.
We have our headquarters in Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm and we call our project Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0. We act locally but think globally. Our goal is to disseminate the results from our test beds and sustainability solutions to other districts and cities in Sweden and other countries.

Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, KTH, is Sweden’s largest university for technical research. KTH is committed to the strategic sustainability work in Hammarby Sjöstad via ElectriCITY Innovation and leads the development work in energy and sustainability.
KTH is also involved in several research and demonstration projects in Hammarby Sjöstad in partnership with ElectriCity. Within the framework of the Energy Communities Demo Project, KTH’s researchers are investigating the technical conditions for sharing energy in a local microgrid. Furthermore, KTH’s researchers analyse how the energy infrastructure in Hammarby Sjöstad should be developed and how different technology choices in the area affect sustainability, environmental goals and the national economy. In a sister project, KTH researchers are investigating how much solar energy the area can absorb and how electricity grid infrastructure and charging infrastructure should be developed to meet electricity needs as the area’s residents switch to using more electric cars.
KTH’s researchers are also investigating how heat pumps in the area can contribute to meeting sustainability goals and how residents can contribute to reduced greenhouse emissions by reducing plastic in their waste. Reuse and circular economy approaches are tested in these contexts. KTH also engages in awareness-raising campaigns, seminars and panel discussions arranged for HS residents to spread knowledge and provide a balanced picture of technology development, technology choices and the role of residents in sustainable social development.
The collaboration between KTH and Hammarby Sjöstad’s residents has now extended over a 10-year period and several joint research projects have led to measurable improvements in terms of residents’ climate impact, sustainability and their personal finances. This work is being done in collaboration with KTH’s efforts for the City of Stockholm and the Stockholm region, where KTH runs several research projects and also supports the city’s climate coordination and innovation agenda. Lessons learned from pilot projects carried out in districts such as Hammarby Sjöstad thus have good prospects of being scaled-up and making an impact throughout the urban area and region.

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is the Swedish research institutes and innovation partner. RISE already has several projects in the Stockholm Green Innovation District and is actively working to accelerate the green transition as an innovation partner and advisor.
Through research and as a leading player in ElectriCity in Hammarby Sjöstad, among other things, RISE has contributed to innovation and co-creation with residents in the area.
RISE is involved in the development of the Stockholm Green Innovation District with its combined expertise in, among other things, sustainable construction, energy systems, circular transition, infrastructure, mobility, data-driven innovation and applied ICT solutions, as well as policy and collaboration processes.
RISE is based on the assumption that the city is an intertwined social, cultural and technological system, with buildings, infrastructure, public spaces and digital technology in interaction with its inhabitants. Such complex challenges require cross-boundary solutions – and an interdisciplinary perspective. Due to its expertise in this area, RISE leads major challenge-driven projects both nationally and internationally, which empower cities’ and communities’ capacity for development and innovation for a sustainable transition and attractive living environments.
RISE’s ethos is that the sustainable cities and communities of the future are viable. They are equipped for a changing climate where green and blue surfaces mitigate the effect of large amounts of water, contribute to biodiversity and better health and greener urban environments. They promote integration, interaction and experiences and offer a well-functioning, safe everyday life for residents, visitors and entrepreneurs.

Stockholm Region EU Office serves as a representation office in Brussels for Stockholm Region. The office monitors the legislative and regulatory activities in the European Union and state our joint positions and recommendations in prioritized policy areas towards EU policy makers.
The office will act as a gate-opener to the EU-arena for Stockholm Green Innovation District, to create opportunities to present the initiative for decision makers within the EU:s institutions and for other regional offices located in Brussels. This enables possibilities for new partnerships and awareness of interesting events, as well as receiving advice and support regarding meetings in Brussels. Presentation of SGID stands primarily in relation to EU:s Green Deal and the climate neutral cities, which the city of Stockholm is a part of. The members of SGID can also benefit from the monitory work of the office regarding EU-legislation, which can affect the business and organisations within the initiative.
Stockholm Region EU Office is conveniently located in the hart of the EU-quarters in Brussels and is close to many of the EU:s institutions. The office can also offer a conference venue for maximum 80 people, to host meetings, seminars or events.
Stockholm Region EU Office is a cooperation led by Stockholm Region Association for European Affairs, which was funded by the city of Stockholm, the region of Stockholm and the municipalities of Stockholm. The office enables strategic cooperation in prioritized policy areas where common interests can be found; such as research and innovation, energy-, climate and environment, transport, digitalisation and regional policy.

Stockholm Water and Waste’s operations are of crucial importance for a sustainable city. Our mission is to take care of Stockholmers’ household waste, provide the city’s residents with fresh drinking water, and treat wastewater. Stockholm Water and Waste also contributes to sustainable development.
We work to minimise water, soil and air pollution from our operations. We carefully manage energy and other resources and strive to apply a life cycle perspective. As a major player in the area, we take due responsibility for protecting the environments of the Baltic Sea, lakes and watercourses and for developing an increasingly cyclical waste management system.
