Stockholm is the EU’s most innovative region
Stockholm Green Innovation District has the strength to operate within the EU’s most innovative region, the Stockholm region. Our ambition is to help strengthen this position. Stockholm’s leadership is evident from the 2021 edition of the European Commission’s comparative study known as the “Regional Innovation Scoreboard”. The European Commission conducts this analysis of 240 regions in Europe on a biannual basis. Stockholm was ranked third in 2015, second in 2019, and now in 2021 Stockholm is in first place.
To measure the innovation capacity of the regions included in the Regional innovation scoreboard, the Commission uses performance indicators in four areas: conditions for innovation (staff, research systems and digitalisation), public and private investments (funding and support, business investment and the use of information technology), innovation activities (innovators, interconnections and intellectual assets), and impact (employment effects, sales effects and environmental sustainability). When the European Commission conducts a similar study of the Member States’ innovation capacity, Sweden comes in first, followed by Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands.
